Ford 601 Will not move
| Todd A |
I have a ford 1957 601 that will not move. The clutch is working and I can see all the gears moving in the transmission and the rear end when I put it in gear. Can any one help?

Can you see ring gear turning or assuming it is. If it is look for broken axle.

I can see what I believe is part of the ring gear moving in the rear end. I was using the tractor when it just stopped moving. It did not make any noise when it stopped moving. When I put it in gear and let the clutch out it lerches very, very slightly.

Does this still sound like it may be an axle ?

Sounds like a broken axle like Shaun says. I think the 600 went to a one piece axle so it can't be a sheard hub. Jack up one at a time or both rear wheels. Watch the ring gear and have someone turn the wheels while in neutral. The good axle will move the ring gear while the broken one won't.

Ok, I jacked up the tractor and both wheels moved the ring gear. I put the tractor in gear and the wheels spin. The problem is that I can stop the wheel by hand While it is in gear. Can a clutch just go out with no warning ? It did not slip, It doesnt smell like burnt clutch and it didnt make any noise when it just decided to stop moving. Am I missing something obvious here ?
