carbon deposit on valve and piston
| Roger-Pierre Girard | Hi, In the restoration process of my 2N, i removed the engine head, When the tractor was running it had black smoke from the exhaust,i thought a ring was broken, after removing the engine head, i found out that the 2 middle piston had a lot of carbon deposit as the 8 valves. The sleeves do not have any scratches at all. If there is no scrathes on the sleeves,i asume the the rings are OK, what would be the cause of the smoking engine and the carbon deposit. Is there a simple way to remove the carbon deposit on the piston ,and on the valves and there surronding. Since i have removed the head do i need to resurface it or just put a new gasket. Thank you very much. Roger-Pierre Girard Montréal, Canada |
| Bob G | You can not assume that the rings are ok. the sleeves may be good but you could have stuck or worn oil rings in those cylinders. you could use MMO9 marvel mystery oil) in the cyclinders to try and free up the rings if they are stuck, ATF will be about the same so I am told. I would at least use a straight edge and check the head to see if it is warped or not. If you have the head resurfaced, make sure the pistons do not hit the head, check with no gasket and no bolts. Be sure to retorque the head bolts or studs after running a bit. I just used a scraper to get the deposits off, being careful to clean around the pistons real good. the MMO may help soften it also. Good luck |
