Fired up for first time 8n
| sal | Just got it started after changing the carb. She smokes and has about 15-20 lbs. of oil pressure. Plus when the clutch is engaged it makes a low grinding sound. Any suggestions on what I need to do to fix these problems? thanks |
| Jim Loveridge | Sal, I don't know what normal oil pressure is on an 8N but as long as it doesn't go below 20 or so when warm I would say it's suffecant. The smoking could possibley be stuck rings which might clear up by itself or maybe pouring a little Marvel Mystery Oil down each spark plug hole and let it set for a day might help. As for the grinding noise with the clutch engaged, do you mean when the pedel is pressed down? That could be a worn throw out bearing. Not a big deal unless it keeps getting worse. Have fun.

| sal | When the clutch is pushed in it does not make the noise. It happens when it is released and driving.
|
| sal | Number 4 cylinder seems to be getting oil in it. When I pull the plug it is all oily and black. She runs strong, but still getting smoke coming out of breather cap.
|
| Jim Loveridge | Without being there, I can't be much help with the grinding noise. It could be transmission, differential, rear axle hub or maybe even something in the PTO. The smoke coming out of the breather cap is a classic symptom of bad rings. The exhaust is getting past the rings and into the crankcase. The oil on the plug is probably the same problem, oil is getting past the rings and into the cumbustion chamber. Like I said yesterday, it might clear up in time. It's worth it to wait and see rather than tearing into it for a ring job. But keep in mind that your tractor is somewhere around 60 years old. It's tired.
|
| sal | she may be old, but she is alot of fun playing and riding her around.. I can live w/ her little problems. I will keep putting the mystery oil in and hope that it takes care of the ring thing. Thanks for your input and help Jim.

| Bob G | You might check and see if the sound is any different with the hyd control lever in up or down position. Pumps can make some noise when in bypass, lever up. keep us posted |
| sal | It does not make a difference. When ever the main shaft is turning it makes the noise. Toke the shifter cover off and looks clean so what ever it is I believe that it is not a major problem and am learning to deal w/ the noise. She still smokes a bit.
