Rebuilt 8N will not start

Roger We had our motor rebuilt, all wires are new, new solenoid, new starter, in fact everything is new and yet we cannot seem to get it started. We replaced starter button, but when pushing starter button, nothing happens. Can jump around solenoid and it will turn over. Checked continuity between starter button and solenoid and is okay. Checked wire between starter and starter button and it is okay. We have tried jump starting, pulling. Could there be a wiring problem? We have gone over schematics and seem to be connected correctly. We would sure like some advice.
Don this might be a silly question, but when pushung the start button do you have the shifter in neutral? It has to be in neutral........it wont start even if you have the clutch depressed if it is in gear.........keep us informed....good luck
Roger Thanks. We definitely have tried that already. It was hard to put everything in that we have done. We sure are stumped.
Roger okay, we put the old solenoid on and now the start button is turning over the engine, but it won't start. We tried two (2) NEW solenoids and they turned out to be bad. ugh. Where do we need to start to diagnose please?
Don do you have a front mount distributor? If so make sure the coil is setting on the distributor properly.........had trouble with the one that i had.............
Larry My dad always said to make an engine run you need spark and fuel. I'd bet you don't have spark. Start out by tracing from the begining. Battery power ok? Power to coil ok? Power to distributor ok? Power to plugs ok? If you have a front mount your timing should be ok. If you have a side mount check the timing.
Bob G It would help if we knew which 8N you have. Front mount dist or side mount distributor.

most common mistake is getting the spark plug wires back on in the correct order. number one plug is closest to fan and firing order is 1 2 4 3

Check for spark at the plugs. take an old spark plug and open the gap up to 3/16" and clamp to good ground. spark shoud jump it with a nice blue spark.

If you have spark, check for fuel by removing the bottom plug from carb. You should get a nice steady flow of fuel. let ite run a while. should get a pint in a couple of minutes.

larry said you need spark and fuel but you also need compression to start and run.

rough settings on the carb are 1 1/2 turns out on both idle and higdh speed jets. should start and run there.

check for spark and fuel and post back and we will go from there. You WILL get her running.

Good luck

Jim Schofield If you have spark and fuel, and the timing is right. Check compression. Try to put some oil in each of the cylinders. You may have washed out the cylinders of any oil used the rebuilding process. I did that once, I'll never forget that lesson. let us know what you find out.
Jim
