Naa: Burned up 12v coil? How to test
| Rob | Hello, I'm no electrician, which is probably why I shouldn't of wired up some headlights. I have a 53 naa/jubilee with a 12v system. I had some old d/c headlights in the garage. I simply mounted them up and wired the red wires from the headlights to a red alligator clip, and the black wires (assuming it was the ground) to a black alligator clip. So I simply hooked the clips up to the battery and they worked well. Last night I started up the tractor and hooked up my lights. I made it maybe 5 minutes before it completely died on me. No spark. Did I totally wire up the lights wrong and burn up the coil? Is there an easy way I could test it? any help is appreciated. Thanks

| Bob G | I don't think hooking up the lights would cause the coil to go out. Coil may not even be the problem. The first thing I would check is the switch and work your way to the points.

| Bob G | I looked at my other post and saw that I really did not give you any help. You make a jumper to go around the switch to check that. I assume tehat you can get to the points. With them closed you can open them by hand and check for spark. they may be corooded and not making contact. if you have avoltmeter you can check for voltage at switch and both sides of the coil. On an 8n with the points open you should show battery voltage to and from coil and at one side of the points. when the points close if they are making contact the voltage will drop off to close to zero. On your 12 volt system you may have a resistor in the circuit, if it is there it may be bad. No voltage to coil could be bad switch or resistor or wiring. Maybe some of the Naa owners on here can help you more Good Luck |
| Rob | I didn't think this ignition system had the old points. It has a side mount distributor. Electronics is not my forte. It looks like the wires go from the key switch, to the starter relay, then to the coil, then to the distributor. All the wiring looks good.

| Bob G | It could have electronic igintion but take the top off of the distributor and see what is inside. Just becauses it was converted to 12 volts does not mean that it was also converted to electronic ignition. Wire should go from batt terminal on starter solenoid to amp meter then to ign switch then on to the coil. may have terminal block also that it goes thru but is just a connection point. The power going to the coil has to be switched or it could drain the battery when not running. check for voltage at the coil with the key on. If the points are there make sure the are open. If you have electronic ignition, you may have learned the downside of having it. let us know what you find |
