8n timing

Mike Monk This is kind of long. I've had 8's for 22 years. Here's the problem. It started missing and finally quit. Taking off the distributor I found the points closed. They were worn out to a point you couldn't set. I bent the points just enough to gap them (stupid) It fired but the timing was off so all it did was backfire. I tried to adjust the timing (real stupid) and it didn't work. I went to my supplier and bought all the tune-up requirements, set the timing in the middle (where it's always been) and fired it up. Wouldn't start, wouldn't even come close. I've tried to adjust the timing without success. Also, it has new wires, new sparkplugs, carburator has been just rebuilt, and has spark to all plugs. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Rick I don't know if you have your problem solved yet or not, but ignition coils can be a real headache at times. They may work and run for a short time or may not work at all. When they heat up a little they expand from heat and cause internal failure. So it would have to be checked after engine stopped to see if it was a bad coil. Also, the condenser inside the distributor can cause similar problems. I just fixed that problem on my Dad,s old 8N. He had put in a complete new tune-up kit in the distributor trying to fix his problem such as yours. Unfortunately he received a bad condenser in his kit and never found the problem before he passed away. By the way, I had spark at cold cranking with this problem. But the longest time I was ever able to keep this tractor running was 20 seconds maximum if it would even start. Ether would help to get it started sometimes. Hope this helps, if not, then I'm sorry to have taken up your time. Rick
