8N Starter Won't Engage
| Steve Gillespie | My '49 8N starter won't engage. The solenoid clicks, and after repeated attempts, the wires begin to overheat. I tried the old 'jump at the solenoid' but did not work. I then replaced the solenoid, but same result. Is the starter bad, or something simpler, like the ignition switch?

| Larry | If your wires are hot you got something wrong. You could have a froze up starter. Sometimes if you have a loose connection the wires or cables get hot. I'd take the starter out and check it out. One thing I've done in the past is get it out and then do a bench test on it. Put in in a vise and put 6 volt/or twelve depending on what it is to it. If it spins it just might be ok. If it don't the starter is froze up. That is what it sound like to me. Maybe someone else has a better idea.

| Jim Loveridge | What Larry says. Steve, what part of the country ary you from? My mothers maiden name was Gellespie.

| Bob G | Do like larry says, test starter. If the starter turns over, the engine may be stuck, which is much worse than a bad starter. Good luck |
