rear axle seals on a 1952 8n

andy I'm replacing the rear axle seals on a 1952 8n. The Ford parts catalog shows an inner and outer seal. The catalog shows an astragal after the inner seal part number saying (No Longer Serviced). Do I need an inner seal or not? With an inner seal installed how is the axle bearing lubricated? Or is this bearing suppose to be packed? When I removed the axle it sure wasn't packed with grease. The bearing was getting oil but, how can it with the inner seal?
Jim Loveridge Andy, you got me thinking about this one. I'm pretty sure your 8N uses the same rear end as my NAA. According to my FO-19 service manual it says the axle bearing should be packed with grease. That would explain your concern about how can oil get past the inner seal to the bearing. But it doesn't explain why your bearing appeard to have oil on it unless the inner seal is worn out. But if it's "no longer serviced" then.............?

Anyone else have an answer to this?

Bob G the FO-4 manual states that the bearings are to be packed with grease. Also says that the late 8n's have the inner seal. I have never done this but it makes it sound like to pack all the bearings reguardeless wheter there is the inner seal or not. I need to check mine. Probally have not been lubed in 30 years. My service book says to repack wheel bearings every 1800 hours and at each brake replacement.
Good luck

Bob G Do a google search for smith's 8n you will find a good site on the 8n's and he has a good section on the seals.
