Woods Mower on ford 8n tractor
| Jon Smith |
I am having trouble with my woods mower on my 8n. Cuts fine in thin grass but bogs down in thick grass. I have tried all different heights and still same problem. I have tried different gears and speed as well which did not help. The strange thing is when I put in reverse the PTO seems to speed up and cut better. Are my blades to dull? Any ideas out there?

More info please! Do you have a Sherman Trans? you can only use a Sherman in neutral for any PTO work. Yes sharpened blades make a lot of difference. Also the front edge of the mower blades should be about 1/2 inch or more lower than the back. 1st gear in some situations may be too fast, then just take a smaller swath through the grass. Keep engine RPM to about 3/4 throttle.

Not sure if its a sherman trans how do I tell? I will try to set front end lower than back and sharpen baldes.

A Sherman trans would be a lever on the left side of trans area ahead of the clutch petal. It could have high and normal or it could be high and low with normal in the middle position, but you have to pull out or push in lever to get it into normal speed range. Most 8n's only had a standard 4 speed transmission. Your comment about the PTO spinning faster in reverse is puzzling. If it has a Sherman it has to be in the normal position for PTO implements or it will affect the PTO speed. Too fast or too slow.
