Boiling gasoline
| Brian Shatswell |
I'm having trouble with the gas getting so hot that it boils in the tank. I flushed the radiator and put new antifreeze in. After running the tractor for about 30 minutes, it begins to sputter like it is going to shut off. When I check the gas level, the fuel is boiling like hot grease in the tank. Any ideas about what might be going on. It is a 49 model 8n.

Have you checked the thermostat? I think on the 49 it is in the upper radiator hose. When I was young on the family farm the of ford we plowed with used to do that on a hot day from over work. The gas would boil and it would vapor lock. Had to let it cool down before you could plow more. If it is doing this under normal operation something is wrong with the cooling system. Check the thermostat first.

Yes check your engine temperature, but find some heat proofing material to put around your fuel tank where it is close to the engine, hot fuel is a disaster waiting to happen.

I just mowed for 2 hours with my 48 8n and it did just fine. It is 80 degrees here today. It is warm as to be expected but a long way from boiling. They never put heat proofing material around the gas tank on these tractors because most of them didn't need it. If yours is boiling you have a problem. They should have put temp gauges on these old tractors.

also check to make sure the gas tank is vented. under pressure gas will boil at a much lower temp. the tank vent may be plugged. can use a vented gas tank lid also.

you may want to check engine timing late timing will cause hotter exhalst and head resulting in hotter fuel since the tank is so close to the top of motor
