bizzare solenoid problem? Ford 8n

terry m. OK, I was the one that was mowing and the tractor made a pop noise and died (wouldn't start again). I got a new battery and had the starter rebuilt including a new solenoid. The tractor started right up. When I shut it off, the starter was going a million miles an hour and was louder than a jet. Unhooking the battery stopped it. I called the shop that rebuilt it and he told me to tap on the solenoid with the butt end of a hammer. Doing this made the tractor try to start (ignition off)...scary & bizarre! Bad (new) solenoid? What do you think?
Bob G sounds like a stuck solenoid to me. good luck!
Bob G Make sure that the solenoid was installed correctly. Small post that the wire from the starter stwitch hooks to should be pointed toward block. But if it was wrong it would not start in the first place come to think of it. You do not need to have the ignition switch on in order for the engine to crank ovewr. Just have it on so it will start. Still sounds to me that the solenoid is stuck. get a new one.
