8N gear shift came out

rdanner I just bought a 48 8n and know little about the mechanics of them. I shifted out of reverse and the gear shift came out. I got it back in but it doesn't want to go in any gear except 2 or 4. Any help would be appreciated.
Salmoneye You are going to have to open up the top of the tranny. You now have parts down in there floating around.
The shift lever is supposed to come off with the tranny cover. There is supposed to be a spring on the underside of the cover with a spring clip holding it all together.
I would not run the tractor with the tranny in this condition. You really don't want to catch the parts in the gear as you will potentially have a much worse situation.
Get an I&T FO-4 manual for the N Series Fords.
