||How would I know if an 861 Powermaster had a select-o-speed transmission or not? Were all 861 powermasters made with this transmission? From all that I've seen, it looks like I want to avoid this transmission. Please feel free to expand, advise or express your opinion. I would like to purchase one of these.
||The 861 Powermasters were made with a Select-O-Speed and a 5 speed manual transmission. The Select-O-Speed was like an automatic transmission and I believe it had 16 forward speeds. The shift lever on the 5 speed is mounted on the top of the transmission housing like any other shift lever but I think the Select-O-Speed lever is mounted on a vertical bracket below the steering wheel & instrument console. You would be wise to avoid the Select-O-Speed transmission. I knew a couple of people who had them on an 861 and on a 5000 and they both had a lot of problems with them. Lots of problems with shifting, not going in gear and sometimes having the tractor jumping into gear when parked and idling.
I have an 861 with a 5 speed manual transmission and have been very happy with it. No transmission or motor problems but had to do some work on the hydraulics due to wear.

||An 861 ford had one transmission a 5 speed with live power. If you have a Select-O- Speed you have a 871 or a 881. 8=172 cu.gas or deisel engine 6=5 speed live power, 1= series,861
