| Andy Weaver | I have a late 70's Ford 535 industrial loader with backhoe attachment. The problem is that the front lift is slow. The tilt on the bucket and the backhoe attachment both work at normal speed. I have talked to several shade tree mechanics and they both think that the control valve will need replaced. If the control valve would need replaced how difficult and expensive would it be to convert to a joystick control? Also is there a good on-line source for these parts? My other concern is that when I go to the local Ford/New Holland dealer they tell me that there is no such beast as a Ford 535 backhoe. Only an Industrial loader tractor is connected with the model 535 designation? The tractor has no PTO or 3-point hitch and the backhoe would appear to me to be a factory install. So what exactly is my machine?

| bob jackson | i have exactly the same problem. also same 535 with backhoe that is factory installed. if you or i find out what problem is let me know.thanks

| Andy Durrence | If you look at the servo valve you will see cylindrical protrusions that contains the spool valve that shuttles back and forth. There are about 3 or 4 components in the assembly. Remove the associated protrusion (I think it takes a 1 1/4" wrench) disassemble the spool assembly, clean well and re-assemble. It's not very hard to do, will lose very little oil, should only take about 1.5 hrs. Make sure all components are free. You may want to take an adjacent spool valve out as an example. Mine did the same thing and I spent $180 to rebuild a cylinder only to luck up on finding the spool valve was all that was wrong. I almost replaced the valve at a cost of $800. That would have hurt. Hope everything works out. This is a very late posting, maybe everything has already been fixed.

| Lee | I have a different problem that maybe one of you can help with. My 535 has a problem keeping the chains tight on the backhoe. The previous owner had the relief ports on the two hydraulic rams that control the chain plumbed into a tee and then into an antifreeze jug. This worked, however it would only take an hour or so to fill up the jug. Being a Mr. fixit I decided to connect the two ports straight together with a new hose. Every since I made the change the chains have way too much slack and I can't keep the backhoe under control.HHHHEEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
| Andy Durrence | My 535 does not have chains. It has a hydraulic motor to swing the boom back and forth. As for your problem, I would suggest routing the "relief ports" back into the hydraulic system. I suspect that there is a port in the frame somewhere ready to be used for such a purpse purpose. If not you could tie into a NON PRESSURIED return line. Look for large lines with regular hose clamps. Hope it works out.

| John in MA | Ok, here is my 2 cents worth, I own a 1979 ford 535 ind tractor with a loader and backhoe. There were several model backhoes available to the origanal buyers of these tractors each with there own model #, somewhere I have literature on the various BH models offered, My tractor is equipped with a 19-551 backhoe and a 19-501 loader. This is why when you go to the dealer they tell you there was no such thing as a "535" backhoe, there were in fact severl different model backhoes that attached to the "535 Ind Tractor", various digging depths and ruggedness ect. Your dealer should have known this unless your parts people havnt been around very long. I agree with a previos post about the spool valve may be in need of some attention, also on mine I have a two position push pull valve along with lift and curl on the loader, one position allows normal curl operation while the other position offers a self leveling action of the bucket to prevent spill back onto hood when raising to load a truck ect. If you have one of these valves it too may cause a problem if not fully engaged in either position. Hope this helps |
| Patrick | Does anyone know where i can buy a manual for one of these Backhoes that tells you what types of oil to use and where to put the oils at and also a repair manual. Thanks

| Jerry | I busted a hydraulic hose and it looks like I will have to cut out the platform to get to it for repair. Anyone know how to replace the hoses on the backhoe from the spool manifold to the boom ? Anybody have a service manual for this model. It looks like I will have to take all hoses loose on the boom and pull the spool manifold out with a come-along toward the front of the tractor if it will fit between the cross braces. Otherwise, I will have to cut out an opening in the platform that the spool manifold bolts to and pull it out the top, replace hose(s) and try to push it all back in and weld the plate back in place.
