??????? wont start ???????
| dave o |
I have a 871. I can't get it started. I have changed the points (twice), new spark plugs, and a new carburator. I have spark at all 4 plugs, I have feul getting to my plugs (ie their wet). I know my issue is in the timeing. I have tried adjusting the distributor while cranking but have not had positive results. Is there anything else I can try???????

Pull the #1 spark plug. put you finger in the plug hole (no kidding). bump over the engine slowly until you feel the compression blowing. Stop. Look at the timing mark. Note the position of the distributor rotor also, should be pointing to #1 on the dist cap. If the timing mark is not anywhere near the the factory mark, then the trouble would most probably be the timing chain has slipped/broken. Remove front engine cover to repair. Big job.

Hay... Thanks for responding. I will try that tommorro, I hope that I can find something less tedious to fix. How would the chain slip? Would I hear it break if it did break? I have had issues with timing before (ie. runnig after it has been turned off) but it was running, (not good) the last time i turned it off. Is it possible my spark is too weak? My uncle had that concern, can the coil go weak, or is it jjust good or bad? Thanks for any and all info, I am more than alittle frustrated.

Its gear. not chain. very seldom do timing gears go out.

Dave O, did you take the distributor out completely and re-install? or just move it around while still in place? Even if just moved around, there is a possibility that it is way off the proper timing and won't start. If it was removed and re-installed, that could also be the no start problem. I still lean to the engine timing gear. They do break, but rarely.

Check this out. Somewhere I got the notion that my firing order was backwards, this happened when I found out that #1 was at the front insteas of the back. At that time I changed my wiring around on the cap. I didn't think it mattered untill Hay told me about the position of the rotor incomparison to the blow at the #1 position. I was out 180 degrees. Making a few adjustments I was up and running. So Hay, THANK YOU! It has been a long month without my baby.
