How to measure for the correct pto shaft?

James Purchased a 501 Ford mower and put it on my ford 3610. Need to mow off that creek bank as weedeating is killing my back. After getting the mower in the "vertical" position, the pto shaft that came with the mower was too short to reach the pto. How does one measure for the size of a pto shaft needed? Best place to get a pto shaft? Thanks
