IH 574 Fuel Problems
| Brian Fleming | Have a 1975 IH 574 Diesel. Is there a easy way to know if my injector pump is bad or okay? If I start the tractor it will run at a low throttle position but die after running for a few moments above idle to PTO rpm. I then have to bleed the main fuel line by pressurizing the fuel tank. I replaced fuel filters and seal with them as part of trying to fix it and think maybe I should put new seals elsewhere in the fuel system. Can I rule out the pump if it isdrawing air into the line or could the line get air in it if the pump was bad?

| MGS | Well, it sounds like an air leak somewhere. I would check all the lines. I don't recall if that model has a transfer pump, but if it does, that is a likely culprit. It's probably not the injector pump. Make sure there are no restrictions in the lines; kinks or pinched off areas. |
| Bill Burge | Sounds like you have blocked fuel taps, fuel should run to filters fairly easily by gravity alone if they are clear and there is fuel in tank. the main supply is the front one on the right, the other two join the two halves of the tank (which may also be blocked) take out the tap and blow though with compressed air. can be done by blowing back the pipe at the filters, but ive found the muck comes back again next week !! Have known tanks to be so full of rubbish they need removing and steam cleaning inside. Hope this helps. |
