Are all hydraulic fluids the same?

Peter Earlier this year, I replaced the hydraulic fluid on a 300U (built-in pump, not the front end loader) using generic transmisson/hydraulic oil from the hardware store. In this forum, McKay mentions using Hytran fluid. Is that just Case's own brand? Would it make a difference? I guess I'm wondering because the lines running from the pump to the reservoir get real hot.
jim Hy Tran is the fluid IH developed and CaseIH chose to stay with it, of course it has been improved different times since the merger. It is an excellent hydraulic transmisson fluid. That being said , your fluid is not causing your system to run hot but it may not take the heat as well as Hy-tran would. You need to determine if system is staying on demand ( high pressure) as is not unusual for these hydraulic systems to do so. The engine will labor if under pressure, if you have a fast hitch, raise and lower hitch, if engine runs free while hitch is moving and starts to labor when hitch stops you are on demand. In that case, check your aux valves to make sure the single , double action setting is ok, no bent or broken pins or stops (if equipped with this feature) and next step would be the orfice and screen inside of the regulator valve body. Normal temp of hydraulic system according to IH is 100 degrees plus ambient temperature, however, in my experience I say that is over stated.
