mag not working

Ron The mag on my farnall A is not sparking.I have taken it apart and nothing is broke, checking the round black thing I thik is the windings the wire that goes to the condenser is shortsd to ground.I don't think that is right. Can anyone help?
claudetrimble the condenser should connect to the points terminal, along with the coil primary wire. be sure the points are clean and working. set points at .020. does the impulse work?.
jim That is the coil, one end of primary goes to points condensor and other end is grounded through that little tag the screw is in to hold coil in place. Primary has very low resistance and requires a very sensitive ohm meter to detect anything but an open circuit . Secondary winding will have in the neighborhood of 5 to 7 k ohms, check from primary to terminal on top of coil where high tension spark is emitted. Points are very fussy on a mag due to low voltage and are to be set at .013. You can check contact of points with the ohm meter but you have to unhook primary coil lead to do so. There are other methods course but they require additional procedures. Coil output can be tested but you need to be familiar with expected results to tell if it is good or bad.
