hydraulics on 404, need help for friend

G3 friend has a recetly aquired 404 and can not get the hydraulics to work. couple of questions

1. Where is the fill level plug located? Have heard it is on the back differential but where.

2. The three point hitch will not raise, what should he look for?

The tractor does not have power steering and he has changed the hydraulic fluid filter and fluid. Said he poured in seven gallons but does not know where to check for fluid level.

Any help would be appreciated.

G3

Hugh Mackay G3: The 404 draws it'd hydraulic oil from the transmission and it only holds 7 gallons. Where did he pour the oil in. Transmission if it has a fill to level plug, it should be near the clutch pedal, about 1/3 of way from bottom on chassis.

Here is a trouble shooting list. Hitch will not raise, could be caused by;
1. unloading valve orfice plugged.
2. unloading valve piston sticking.
3. flow control valve spring broken, piston
sticking or check ball stuck in orfice.
4. unloading valve ball not seating.
5. main relief valve spring broken or valve is
leaking.
6. cylinder safety (cushion) valve faulty.
7. auxillary valve cover O ring damaged.
8. linkage disconnected from control lever or
valve.

I know very little about the 404, just happens to be covered in the same IT manual as my 140. From the looks of the photo in the manual, most of those items are in the hydraulic unit under the seat.

G3 thanks for the list of things to look at.

Well he got the lift to raise up but now it will not go back down, even with a 200 pound load on it, be up for three days now.

Still need help.

Thanks in advance.

G3

Hugh MacKay G3: Here is trouble shooting for hitch won't lower.

1. Control spool valve sticking or O ring damaged.

2. Drop poppet valve sticking or O ring damaged.

It's lot shorter list than hitch won't lift.
