international 544
| Nathan Nelson | I own a international 544, When the tractor gets up to runing temp. it starts to act like its runing out of gas. Jus lookin for some help where to start. rebuilt the carb or is it something else causing this problem
|
| bontai Joe | Fuel lines running near something hot enough to vaporize the gas before it gets to the carb? (or diesel before it gets to the injectors)? Engine overheating?

| Jim y | I have a IH 444 doing the same thing. It starts great, runs great for an hour or two and then acts like it's running out of gas. If I choke it I can nurse it along and sometimes it comes back for a while and runs good but only for a few minutes, then back to spit and sputter, loss of power, etc. I too have rebuilt the carb several times but it's been a while. It ran great and one day it just started acting up. Tomorrow I am going to clean the carb, make a heat shield to add between engine and carb. and put some insullation on fuel lines at engine. Will get back if it workes or not. |

| jim y | I cleaned the carb today. It appeared to be clean, but I cleaned it all anyway. Checked to see if needle valve worked and it did. Put it all back to gether. Didn't have new gaskets, so put a thin coat of wheel bearing grease on them and tightened it down very tight. Backed the high speed jet out three turns, put it all back and fired it up. Ran great, no further adjustments needed so far. Took it around the field with the 6 foot mower going, in wet thick johnson and bahaia grass, weeds, etc. it did fine. Got up to running temp, but only worked it for about a half hour, but it ran the best it has for a long time. Maybe it's getting ready to blow? Any way, for now it appears the carb was the problem. I'll find out the next 105 F day we get, like Friday. I hope this is a cure, time will tell. |
| jim y | I removed my carb today and cleaned it out well. I didn't have new gaskets so I coated both sides with wheel bearing grease and screwed it down very tight. Backed the high speed needle out three turns and put it back in place. I fired it up and it ran like a champ. No adjustments needed. I took my 6' mower around the field in wet johnson and bahaia grass and weeds. It worked great. Got it up to running temp and all was well. Hasn't run this well in a long time. This may be the fix, but only time will tell. |

| jim y | I cleaned my carb today. It looked ok but I cleaned it anyway. Put it back to gether but didn't have new gaskets. Coated them with a thin coat of wheel bearing grease and screwed it down tight. Put it back on, fired it up and it ran great. Took it and the 6' mower around the field. It cut the wet grass, johnson and bahaia and weeds and ran great. Got it up to running temp. and it never skipped a beat. Ran great. This may be the fix but only time will tell. Good luck. |

| jim y | Tues. June 30 Sorry guys for all the duplicatins above. When I made my entry it didn't appear to take, so I did it again, and again, and again. Sorry again. HOwever, I did take the 444 out for a cutting spin today. I mowed arond the fence line in Poison Ivy up to the oil pan. 444 ran great for about an hour, and sure enough, it started to spit and sputter again. Nursed it back to the shop. Let it cool, and then cut a metal 'heat shield' to go between carb and engine. I wired it to the carb and air intake tube. It works fine, there is about 1/2" air gap between carb and engine wall. This should let the fan move air between the two areas and keep the new shield cooler. Hope so any way. Well, back to the field to try it out again tomorrow. Stay tuned. |
| mj | when/if, it starts sputtering again run water from a garden hose on the bottom half of the coil for a minute or so to cool it down and see if the sputtering stops. if so, replace the coil. if not, it did not cost you anything to check this.
