Honda H4514H Ignition Coil Replacment
| Jon | How big a job (hours) is it to remove the engine to replace the coil? Thanks, Jon |
| Tom | Jon, I have an older Honda flat rate manual, it looks like they have it listed at 1.9 hrs. Tom C.

| Jon | Tom, Thanks for the flat rate time. |
| Jon | Tom, Thanks for the flat rate time. Could I also bother you for the flat rate times for the following: 1) replace head gasket? 2) replace water pump? 3) replace thermostat? What would cause a blown head gasket? Jon |
| Tom | Jon, Here are the Honda flat rates: Cylinder head gasket: 2.8 hrs Water pump : 2.1 hrs Thermostat: .3 hrs Blown head gaskets are usually caused by overheating; often the cylinder head is warped and needs to be machined. Overheating can be from lack of coolant (leak), thermostat sticking, fan problem, water pump problem, hose collapsing, or as in my case on a 4518 blocked cooling air flow from dirt packed in the radiator. I was cleaning the screen in front of the radiator faithfully but couldn’t see the dirt that was building up cooling fins. Then the coolant temp warning light in the instrument panel lit up. After spraying water through the cooling fins to flush out the dirt and checking for good coolant flow, everything was fine. Tom C. |
| Jon | Tom, Thanks again for all the great info. My H4514H has a bad coil and a blown head gasket. I will check out the radiator fins. Thanks for your help. Jon |
| Tom | You're welcome Jon, glad to see you are interested in repairing your 4514. The H4514 and H4518 and good mowers, once your head gasket problem is fixed you will again have the quiet, smooth and strong running liquid cooled engine that made these mowers so popular. Now if they just had power steering...! Tom C.
