Re: cat 955 final drive info

catapillar 955 This machine was abandoned 5 years ago. The property owner has inlisted me to evaluate its condition so he can decide whether to sell it or scrap it. He did not know if runs or not. So far i've found that it does run, the hydralics work and the transmission seems to function properly. The problem is it won't move. I suspect either the high low range or the finals to be the cause. I'm hopeing someone out there could help me figure this out. I do not have access to a manual. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

hector gemme Did you check the transmission oil level and maybe the trans.oil fiter and streaner are plug or the chaines are freeze.
geoff The oil level is ok i'm not sure where the filter or strainer are. There are 2 what look like filter housings 1 is on top of trans the other is a little further back halfway covered by the seat the tops are held on with maybe 6 bolts. I can see the driveshaft turning and changeing directions when i shift it. I can move the machine with the bucket.
hector gemme The streaner should be smaller than the transmion oil filter and the pipe line should be connect to the oil pump
geoff Ok i know the one you mean i'll check that out. Thank you Hector
geoff I pulled out the strainer and sure enough it was clogged. There was metal, rubber and plastic, and what i suspect friction material.Anyways i cleaned it up and put it back machine still won't move.I guess it must have bigger problems. any more suggestions? or diagnosis? thank you geoff
hector gemme You should have pump or transmission probleme
geoff Does that pump control the engagment of the final drive because i can see the output shaft of the transmission turning and changing direction when i shift the lever.
hector gemme HI Remove the plate for the pto and check if the bevel gear is turning with the transmission is angaged at haft trottle and dont forget you need a other guy on seat when angage in front direction(safety)
Brandon Was there a fix found for this? I have a 940 with the exact same troubles. Thanks.
