Cat 302.5c bogging down after 10 minutes of use
| Chris Townsend |
I borrowed a 302.5c mini excavator from a friend. It starts right up, has about 410 hours but after about 10 minutes of use, you can start feeling it lose power, to where eventually you can't move 2 feet without the motor straining and shutting down. If I leave it sitting for an hour or so I get the same result, starts fine, works great for about 10 15 minutes and then I'm pretty much stuck. Any suggestions? The little screen flashes S---- and sometimes does a countdown between 100-110, what does this mean?

Don't know what the code is the screen flashes but it sounds like the fuel cap isn't venting.

Besides looking at it, what would be the best way to ensure that is or is not the problem.

Remove the fuel cap and clean it in a solvent tank, or a pan of diesel fuel if a solvent tank is not available. Then blow dry with compressed air from the inside of the cap to the outside. If that doesn't do the fix then I'd start looking at the fuel system. It could be sucking air but they usually won't restart after that unless the filters are re-primed. Check the engine oil level and coolant condition/level. Looking for fuel in both.

Have you found a fix for your 302.5C excavator? I have a 2006 doing the same thing.
