988 cat

hi, we have a last of the d343 powered 988 cat loaders (early 1972), not running, but we'd like to get it going! (broome, australia),last known condition was it was working, but lost most power and was driven back to the workshop. when they tried to restart it, wouldn't even fire. head was fairly new, and fuel pump was rebuilt as thought to be the problem, but wouldn't go! was left in a yard til now. any ideas? have heard of solenoid in fuel pump that is hooked to oil pressure. is there anyway to test? cheers

what is your fuel pressure? use your hand priming pump and pump up the pressure, see if it stays up or falls off quickly. could be the spring and ball on the return line have something in them. check the primary fuel filter- screen and see if it is full of debris. the pin your talking about is oil pressure controlled, and when it gets oil pressure moves out of the way. did you drain the bottom of the fuel tank to see if water had collected in it? you could have some bad fuel. try running it out of a 5 gallon bucket with clean fuel, use your hand priming pump to push the new fuel through the system, then try starting it. try these and see if it works.

thanks for the tips. like i said this hasn't run for a while (maybe 10 years!) and was looked at by a mechanic when it stopped so they probably checked those things but will try them all again! we've been given the loader if we can get it to go, so a bit of a challenge. the oil in the sump is pretty much diesel so there could be other problems too. not at the machine location at the moment but will post when playing with it. cheers!
