Fuel injector retaining nut...
| Greg |
Hello, does anyone know if Caterpillar makes a special socket to fit the injector retaining nuts on the combustion chambers on a 955C traxcavator, engine model #12A 781? I think the year is betweeen 1955 and 1959. The retaining nut on this machine is circular, not hex and it has serated or knurled edges. A traditional socket doesn't fit it. We've tried just about everything, but can't get the retainer out so we can remove the combustion chambers to replace the o-rings and washers. We have the tool to remove the combustion chamber itself, but can't get the circular nut off to get that far. Thanks for your help!

yes they do have a special socket for that nut. do not know the part number, but the 3208 injection pump uses the same socket for the injection pump hold down nuts.

Thanks for the response! So many people have told me that this retainer has to be a 1" hex and takes a 1" 6 pt socket to remove. I didn't think I was going crazy! At least now I know that I need to look for this special socket and quit trying to make something else work before I get in trouble! If you happen to find out the part#, please let me know. Thanks again!
