What to look for when buying a used backhoe.

Mark Oetting I am going to look at a used Case 850d with a 4 in 1 bucket this weekend.Any thing to look for besides leaks and that it operates ok.I know that the left brake is hard and the right one works good. Thanks,Mark
AJ Do you mean a 580D TLB or an 850D crawler loader with a backhoe,I'll guess its a 580D TLB as it would be more common, good machine, try pushing with the front bucket in first gear,if the power train is ok it will spin the wheels, check the swing tower to hoe pivot you don't want any slop there, pins and bushes should be tight on the backhoe,it is important that the holes the pins/bushes goes in are not wallowed out,its no big deal to have to change a pin and a couple of bushes but if the holes are wallowed out its a different ball game, you need decent buckets to dig with, hydraulics need to be holding and have no major leaks, operate the backhoe and note the change of engine tone when the cylinders reach the end of stroke,if the pump and pressures are good there will be a noticable change of tone, you will need decent tires,if you are used to tractors check what you would on them.
Good luck
AJ

mark Thanks for your reply. I am used to farm equipment and have operated many backhoes, but this will be my first to buy. Will update when i get it home. Mark
Mark Went and looked at backhoe today. No smoke, trans and hyd. good. All pins and bushings looked new, no play at all, all greasable pins. There were no brakes at all,$300.00 a side to fix.All hoses looked new with lines plumed for a hammer or compactor. Hoe was in transport position, unlocked and was not able to get it to lock back in transport position. It would not come back far enough to lock. What would cause this.Mark
AJ Sorry about the late reply as the post had moved off my screen, there is nothing wrong with the boom not locking in position its the knack, start with the boom out straight behind the machine, dipper folded in lift the boom up fast and at the last split second push the same lever away from you and the boom will come the last inch.when you need to unlock the boom you need to push the lever away from you to the lower position and the boom will come up enough to get the safety off,you will think what is this guy saying put the lever in the down position to lift the boom but that is exactly how it works.
AJ
