stuck in gear
| richard Harrison | Case 885XL 1989, for the second time in Two years I've got it stuck in High range I can select any of the four speeds, but can't get reverse or low range. The last time my mechanic came out to me, he shoved a long steel bar, through from the (outside) back of the cab and wiggled it about to free something, he said I may have rushed the gear selection in use, Is this a common problem how can I fix it myself, does something need replacing to repair it properly or would it be best left until the clutch is replaced in the future? |
| AJ | I'm not into ag tractors, this is no more than a suggestion,I had a look at the online parts catlogue for your tractor and see that both the range and speed shift is remote control made up of lots of rods, levers and cranks,it would be my guess that one of the rods is gone over centre rather than any trouble inside the actual gearbox,it is more than likely that a simple adjustment will cure the problem if you knew which rod to adjust, put a second person in the seat to move the troubled lever and you watch the linkage,if you spot the rod see what position it is in related to what it is attached to,try to move it one way or the other, your mechanic should have made the adjustment the last time. | richard Harrison | Thanks AJ appreciated, I asked on a UK forum last night and they came up with much the same suggestion. off up the field this morning with a helper and take a look (wheels chocked for safety of course) thanks again richard |
| richard Harrison | Right taken a look at it, hows this sound. Gearstick drops down from cabin ends in a square section rod shape at 90 degrees, this then passes horizontally through Two steel plates which (i'm guessing) one is forward/reverse the one parallel forward hi. I couldn't pry anything apart so instead I removed the 13mm bolt that holds the stick in place and moved the square section rod outwards towards the roadwheel freeing something up that way. Now I have all my gears again.....oh' no I haven't somethings gone wrong again either I haven't positioned the selector cams correctly before bolting the stick back in place, or something else is wrong any ideas anyone cheers Richard |
| AJ | Have you got a manual to look up as to how the linkage is setup, you best look closely at what you loosened and try to put it back exactly as it was, there may be a paint mark or something you can match,I cannot advise anything else as the parts drawing only shows the unassembled parts. AJ |
| richard Harrison | Right, I had a mechanic out to it yesterday and between us we unhooked it off the tractor to inspect it properly. From the rubber knob on top it twists this way and that, ending in a square section rod which passes through Two plates which go on to operate the actuation rods on the side of the box' this square rod tails away onto a flattened end, the sides of which began square (Twenty years ago) but have now rounded off nice and shiny, so don't properly engage these actuator 'paddles' Solution would appear to be either build-up and reform the worn edges or source and new one and hope the 'paddles' on the gearbox side can be adjusted to again correspond with new part |
