injector pump / body seperation

chris 1840 would not idle up or down. Turned it over with fuel line from puel pump disconnected and it was pumping fuel so - I'm going to the injector.
It would be much easier to get ot if I could somehow seperate the body (top nd bottom half) - is this possible? there is not much room to get in there otherwise.

AJ You saying the engine wont speed up or down,if its starting I doubt if there is anything wrong with the injectors, there are three different injector pumps, see what yours is and come back.
AJ

Llyod Very hard to know what you mean,if you mean seperate the top from the bottom of the injector pump to make it easier to remove I would advise against doing that, the pump comes off in one piece and goes back on the same,it is timed to the engine and by you asking the question you clearly have no experience and should have a mechanic do it.

chris I meant to remove the upper half of the body/uniloader frame to access the engine easier.
here is what happened - my stpe son was using it, he idled it down and got off the loader to move something. He got back on and tried to idle up with no response. I tried to start it the next day and it struggled to light off. It finallay did but would only idle. I shut it off then tried to start again and it would not. I took the fuel line off at the injector pump, turned it over and saw that it was pumping fuel. I then took the lines off of the injector pump (to the injectors) and observed no fuel. I am need ing to know the proper way to remove injector pump please.

thank you for any advice
Chris

chris mechanics cost too much - I have always been able to work on my own stuff just sometimes need some advice.
AJ You are a bit clearer now, before you take off the injector pump you need to check a few things,as I said before there are three types of pump fitted, there is a CAV rotary,a Bosch rotary and a Bosch inline, all three pumps have an electric shutoff,if for any reason the shutoff has an electrial fault fuel will not go through the pump, the two rotary pumps has a single wire to power the stop/run switch,if it's a rotary you have check that connection,it should be hot when the key is on,hold the pump switch with your finger tips and switch the key on and off you should feel it jump,if its an inline pump you have it will have the four injector pipes coming off the top in a line that pump has a solenoid to pull and push the stop lever on the pump,it is spring loaded to stay in the stop position, when the key is turned on the solenoid pulls the stop lever to the run position and it must stay there for the engine to stay running, that's why I asked what pump you got, with any of the pumps the on/off must be working properly, you cannot go by the fuel you see coming out of the pipe, the fuel system needs to have a good flow, clean filters in order to pressurize the fuel system correctly, about the pump removal, the pump is attached to a drive gear inside the timing cover, the gear is too big to come through the hole that the pump driveshaft fits through therefore the gear has to be removed from the shaft, there is an access hole directly in front of the centre of the pump, its got a plastic cap that unscrews counter clock, there is a timing pin under the pump that fits into a hole in the gear when its lined up so the pump will be timed correctly when reinstalled, for now after checking the electric on off fit new filters, bleed the system, loosen each injector pipe a few turns and crank the engine over till fuel spurts out, tighten the pipes and start.
Good luck
AJ

chris this injector pump has the injector lines coming out the front of the unit and the switch/solenoid is on the underside (difficult to get a wrench on). I have power to the solenoid but am not sure about the solenoid yet. I have discovered that the radiator is shot and was leaking pretty good. would overheating play a role in the shut down of fuel? I have not removed the injector pump yet. I tried setting the timing pin (turned the engine over several times) but could not get the pin to seat. I will check try the solenoid and get back to you.
Thank You very much for your patience!
Chris

Re: injector pump / body seperation

You have the CAV pump with the solenoid on the underside, you should feel the plunger jump inside the solenoid if you can get your finger tips on the body,if you can't feel it jump take it off being careful not to lose the spring and plunger which will fall out when you undo the solenoid, leave the plunger and spring out and screw the solenoid back in and see if it will run,if it does you will have to stop it using the manual stop in front of the throttle, the front of the engine is the fan end regardless of how it is fitted in the machine,if the the engine overheats the buzzer should come on but I don't think there is a shut down device,
AJ

chris see ya lloyd - you clearly have no experience helping others and should stay off the forum
