Case IH 255 Steering
| Ray Johnsen | I use a Case IH 255 to mow on my acreage. The outside wheel turns quite a bit more than the inside wheel whether I turn left or right and the outside wheel slides and tears up the turf. The toe-in appears to be correct per the manual. This should be simple to resove but I'm at a loss. Thanks. |

Check your track rod. |
| Ray Johnsen | AJ, Thanks for the response. This tractor does not have the adjustable front axle. The inside wheel should turn sharper than the outside wheel as the turn circumference is tighter, however the outside wheel turns considerably sharper. The manual states that the toe-in should be .16" to .36". I don't know what should be adjusted to get the wheels to turn at the proper angle. Thanks for any advice you can provide. Ray J. |
| AJ | I looked at the drawing of the fixed axle 2 wheel drive, the track should remain the same regardless of the position,if you check the toe in with the wheels in the straight ahead position then go to full lock left or right the distance should be the same, both wheels have to move the same amount,if the wheels are not moving the same amount something is worn or slipping, look at where the drag arms connect to the kingpins, you seem to be suggesting that one wheel should move less than the other, that can't happen,if your tractor has a diff lock make sure it is disengaged when turning tight. | Ray Johnsen | Thanks AJ. You're right, as the connection to both wheels is fixed, they should turn the same but in this case (no pun intended)they don't. Again, the outside wheel turns sharper than the inside wheel and that is why it is a mystery to me. All connections are tight. Tractor does have a diff. lock and it is disengaged. Regards, Ray |

| AJ | Has the tractor always being like this, the only thing I can think of what could be wrong that one of the drag arms is a different length that would cause one wheel to turn more than the other, which is the outside wheel as it is a term I am not familiar with,I'm in the UK. AJ |
| Ray Johnsen | AJ, thanks again for your response. By "outside wheel" I mean the right wheel when turning left and the left wheel when turning right. Both "outside" wheels appear to be turning the same amount. It is obvious when observing the wheels that the angle of the "outside" wheel is much greater than the "inside" wheel. Hope this makes sense. Another question for you, is the tachometer adjustable? It shows 2500 rpm with the engine off and then goes to the extreme right (pegs the needle) when the engine is running. The hour meter works fine. Thanks for taking time to respond. Regards, Ray |
| AJ | Well I'm stuck on the steering unless it is overlocking, can't say about the techo adjustment,it is mechanical cable driven unit, you may be able to adjust it but I don't know. AJ |
| Ray Johnsen | AJ, Thanks for taking the time to address the steering issues. Greatly appreciated. Have a nice weekend. Regards, Ray |
