oil weight
| howard | what is the recommended engine oil weight for 1200 david brown i'm using 15w40 and its pumping oil out the exhaust.

| AJ | The Shell book recommends what you are using 15/40,regardless of what you use it should not be coming out of the exhaust, you sure its oil and not diesel,if the engine is running good and not missing the injectors can be ruled out, look at the intake manifold,a standard tractor did not have a glow plug but one could have been fitted afterwards, check for one and if there is one check its not dripping diesel into the manifold, check the air cleaner is not overfilled,if the engine is breathing heavy the rings are worn,a new set of rings may cure the problem, that engine does not have liners which means if the bores get badly worn they need to be rebored, the valve guides are another point where oil can get in but not as likely as the rings. | howard | the engine has been overhauled about 125 hrs. ago. I was looking in my repair book and noticed how the valve seal set down in the head. it runs really strong so I don't think it is a ring or piston problem. Only the #1 cyl. is pumping oil and the level is going down.

| AJ | The seals on the intake valve should be replaced if the valves are removed as the groove for the keepers can damage the seals if valves are removed, they can also go hard and crack or break up,pull the rocker cover and check that the plugs in each end of the rocker shaft are in place and tight,if a plug had come out too much oil would flood the area, run the engine to see that the oil is flowing back down to the pan and not pooling,if it is pooling on top check why,if the pistons and rings are good that leaves the valve guide as the entry point unless an oil ring is broken.
