Case 885 stalling under load

Mark R Hi all - I have a 1972 Case 885 3 cyl diesel with CAV injector pump. It starts up and idles fine also runs fine just putting around, but after about 10 - 20 mins of real work, it coughs and dies. Then it can't be restarted without a lot of ether, or waiting several hours. I noticed that I can usually keep it running somewhat if I work as low throttle as possible and reach around every now+then pump the primer lever when it starts to falter. Does this sound like a familiar problem with a definite cause or do I have to R+R the whole fuel system?

Paul I don't know what you mean by R & R, but it sounds like you need to bleed the fuel system, to the injectors.
AJ Start off at the fuel tank,is there a good flow of fuel leaving the tank,is the vent clear, take the glass bowl off and clean the gauze filter and pump body, fit two new filters and bleed the system, open the two bleed screws on top of the filters, open the two bleeders on the pump, with the engine in the position so that there is pressure on the priming lever operate the lever till air free fuel comes from the back filter and close the bleeder, then the front, keep priming till the lowest on the pump is air free and finish with the highest, prime on till the lever goes limp, loosen the injector pipes that connect to the side of the injectors not the top,on full throttle spin the engine over on the starter till fuel spurts from the pipe unions, tighten the pipes and the engine should start.

Mark R Thanks AJ, Paul.

I have bled the system twice now in the past few weeks and changed both filters and also the fuel and cleaned out the sediment bowl. Still NG -- will run fine for 10 - 20 mins at high RPM or basically forever at low RPM. Also I notice that when it starts to die, the sediment bowl is noess than half full -- like the pump is not pulling enough fuel?

I took off the fuel pump and looked it over -- seems OK -- diaphram looks good. I did notice, however that with the pump removed and with both inlet + outlet submerged in jars of fuel that when I press the priming lever there are ALWAYS bubbles at the outlet, no matter if the pump is fully primed or not. Not sure if this is bad. Any comments?

Thanks again.

AJ The fuel tank on the 885 is higher than the feed pump,if it has an unrestricted flow to the feed pump all it has to do is push the fuel on through the filters to the injector pump,99% of fuel trouble is caused by dirt stopping the fuel leaving the tank, that is the reason you need to make sure that you got a good flow at the feed pump,if the diaphragm is good about the only place it can draw air is the inlet or the seal under the glass bowl, there are two poppet valves in the feed pump both need to be seating properly,if there is the slightest leak the diesel will just move back and forth but having said that there is a transfer pump which is part of the injector pump that would keep the fuel supplied,my guess is a restricton between the tank and feed pump, you have checked the vent.

Mark R I puuled the tank, drain + rinse, there was about a dozen specks of dirt in there... I also notice that the line from the tank to the pump is just plastic tubing pressed hand tight onto a nipple on the tank -- possibly drawing air there although no seepage. The gasket on the glass bowl is not perfect -- could be leaking there too. Finally I note that one of the poppet valves in the pump is loose -- looks like somebody went at it with a screwdriver or something. I think I'll spring for a new pump, it's not as expensive as I expected.

Thanks for all your help -- I think I should be able to get it sorted now.

AJ The poppet valves should be tight and have gaskets under them, you may as well change the pump as I doubt if there is repair kits any more.
Good luck
AJ

Mark R Thanks all for the help -- I replaced the lift pump and all is well now.
