'49 Super A - Starting Engine

Hello everyone,

This summer I overhauled a '49 Super A. Today I finally managed to have it all back together. Sadly she wont start for me. I was wondering if someone could help narrow down the reasons with me.

First, the engine turns over. The Carb is getting gas. I followed how to time the engine per the manual but I am not 100% sure I did it correctly. How can one tell if timing is off?

There is small puffs of white (not strong though, translucent white) smoke when the Engine turns over. And sometimes after i am done turning the engine with the starter, I hear a sucking noise then bubbling noise. Perhaps the oil? Is that an issue.

How can i tell if I am getting spark at the plugs?

I know there are so many possibilities. But please work with me, and I will try my best as well. This is the first time I have ever taken apart an engine so It was a massive learning experience for me esp. at age 18.

How to check for spark? Remove one plug, reinsert it into the wire's boot and holding it by the insulated boot, touch the electrode at the bottom of the plug to a bare metal nut or bolt on the engine block some distance away from the spark plug hole in the head to avoid fire. Then crank the engine over, you should see a bright blue spark jump the electrodes of the plug.
