will a 8N engine work in a 9N
Terry Campbell |
I just purchased a 9N which is not running. After looking it over I realized it had a side distributor so I believe this is a 8N engine. There seems to be way too much travel in the clutch pedal. It does have the sherman transmission. Is this engine going to work?

Hello Terry, welcome to the forum. The two engines are basicley the same. You are correct that the side distributor makes it a late 8N. The Sherman transmission would have nothing to do with the clutch pedal travel. The rod from the clutch pedal to the throw out arm has an adjustment at one end. Let's hope that's all there is to that. As for the engine not running, you will need to do some analyzing. It takes fuel, air, compression and spark at the right time to run. Check for fuel flow (good gas) through the carburetor by removing the plug at the bottom of it. You should be able to fill a pint jar in about 3 minutes. Do a compression check, Should be somewhere around 90 psi or more. check for spark at the plugs and check that the plugs aren't fouled. Check the plug wires for correct firing order. 1,2,4,3 from front to back. I'm pretty sure that distributor rotates ccw. You can remove the cap and watch it while turning it over. Let us know what if anything you find. You never said if it's converted to 12 volts.
