Ford 3600

RL 56 I have a Ford 3600 that at times shifts normal and will take off when the clutch is released at other times the tractor acts like the brake is set when it isn't or like something is locked up and it wont move and the motor bogs down until you clutch it to take the strain off the motor. Any suggestions on what might be taking place
sixbales Howdy RL56, welcome to the SSB Ford tractor forum.

Your shift mechanism is badly worn and what is happening, it is shifting into two gears at once. This is a very bad situation, as you can break gears (working one gear against the other) if you allow this to continue.

You can buy a new aftermarket shift cover complete with shift levers for your tractor, for just over $100. It's an easy job to replace the cover. Just put both levers in neutral and pull the cover. You will also need a new gasket. SSB may have one. Steiner advertises that they have one for a 3600. There are many sources for this item on the internet, and ebay as well. Double check with the supplier that their cover will fit your tractor before purchasing.

Post back if you have any problems. Don't allow this to continue.

sixbales RL,

SSB doesn't have a cover for a 3600. Try an internet search for 'Ford 3600 transmission cover'. Before buying, double check with the seller to ensure it will fit your tractor.

Re: Ford 3600

I've never had any luck posting photos on this forum, but here goes one more try.

Re: Ford 3600

Photo of shift cover....I hope!

Jim I had a similar problem. I welded the end of the shifter lever, making it a little longer. Works great. This may not work for you. Have to figure out exactly what's wrong with yours. I used RTV.
