Wallace,
on your gm alt. there is a big wire that goes to the battery then there are two wires in a plug on it. Try un-pluging thine two wires and let it sit. if the battery goes down then you have a draw from #2 terminal, see if it is switched, if not make it switched.
Second, be carfull and take the battery wire of the alt then see if it goes down, if not then you might have a voltage regulator inside the alt that is bad.
The ceramic block you found could be a resistor for the old 6 volt system. if it was 6 volt, it used 3 volts for the coil just like the old 9n and 8n fords did.
