Simonone inside the rear axle casings there are 2 friction discs...one either side of the actuator which contains 2 balls....when you apply the brakes the brake rod pulls on the actuator in effect opening it up...the balls are situated in a "ramp" they in turn move up the ramp and expand the actuator which in turn move the discs outwards to come agains the rear casing on one side and the brake reaction plate on the other....they are in effect "trapped" between these two faces and as they are in turn splined to the half-shafts they slow down the final drives and eventualy brake the tractor to a stop. The early brakes (your set up) were famed for burning out or becoming hard through use and eventually there was little or no safe brakes....the oil seals in the axle casing were known to leak as well and soaking the discs in oil ....no brakes again.....I hope this has been of some help to you...if you need any more help please get in touch...Best regards...Geoff
