I recently bought a used MF135 Diesel (73 model). The thing was running like a top until yesterday, when I stalled it out. I dropped the powerlift, put the gears in neutral and cranked the engine. It turned over, and then continued to turn over even when I released the ignition switch. It didn’t start and after that it was dead. I then tried to jump the battery and when I did, the jumper cables got real hot, real quick. I disconnected them and started looking for info on the electrical system. My guess is that there is a short somewhere, but I am now also concerned about the alternator, after the jumper cable incident. Where should I start? I'd think start at the ignition switch (cheapest!) and work back from there. I have a lick of common sense, but am not really a mechanic. Electrical systems are a weakness of mine in particular. I've ordered a shop manual, but thought that I'd get a head start by asking for help on this forum. If I need to order a wiring harness, does anyone have suggestions on where to pick one up? Thanks in advance for any advice that might be offered!
