Craftsman lawn tractor wont start

Craftsman 14.5 (I think) riding mower wont start. Will rev, but wont turn over. If I keep revving it for 6 or 7 seconds, it will make a loud noise (sounds like a gun shot). New battery and spark plug, cleaned the air filter, connections look OK. Thanks for any advice.
