I noticed the identical frame, cast iron front axle, hydro, and engine on JD and Craftsman models at the local Farm & Garden show. The JD salesman walked away when I asked him "who makes these for JD?" The JD dealer mechanic approached me and confirmed my suspicions. He say flat out that the tractors are made by the same contractor (AYP) and are identical except for sheet metal, paint, and a few trim items. He works on them, he would know. Given that both are rated almost identically by Consumer’s Reports, #1 & #2, it would seem it matters not which one you buy. Of course, purchase price and availability and price of repair parts are also factors to be considered.
