Don - You could have a bad head gasket or worse, a warped head. The valve seats could be in need of lapping, such that they currently do not seat properly. One or more valves could be sticking. The cam lobes could be worn. Key in the flywheel could be sheared. Carb could be in need of a rebuild or adjustment. - Dave
