In Reply to: cast iron front axle - how important is it? Won't steel do? posted by Steve A. on Monday, March 31, 2003:
The real issue is "is the axle strong enough"? The stamped steel axles, once bent, are near impossible to straighten and keep straight. You would think that cast iron would automatically be stronger but look at one on a Craftsman and see for yourself, it's puny. And if you break a cast iron axle, it too is near impossible to repair.
If I were mowing a rough 5 acres, I'd be looking at a New Holland "Boomer" or something like that. Go to a dealer and look at that cast iron front axle. It looks like something off a old truck. Of course, it's way expensive.
