Sears 42" deck mowers use two different sizes of belts the rod type of engaugement uses one and the 2000 up cable engaugement style use another size. They don't interchange. Also check this on the right side of the tractor at the engine pully theres a belt guide. I have seen these get bent ( guy in Mass went 4 wheeling and tore it right off the tractor !!! ) bend that rod as close to the pully as possible. Also check deck alignment pre 2000 tractors were awfull looked like a drag car cutting the grass.
