Hi Tim: I just had almost the same problem. I agree with Joel. Sounds like a safety switch. My 18 HP model was Sears 917.254860. In my case, the mower was running across the yard just fine and suddenly turned off..no coughing or sputtering...just like you turned off the switch. I followed the problem to the coil and replaced it and everything returned to normal. ( $61 for the part at my Briggs & Stratton dealer. My mower would turn over the engine,it just wouldn't spark. Since yours wont turn over, I suspect its a safety switch in series with the solenoid. If you have a schematic you can follow the circuit through the switches to the solenoid. A good ohmmeter/voltmeter helps a lot if you have one.
