It sounds like one of the safety switches isn't working. This will prevent the ignition and starter from working. Make sure you are sitting on the seat, the gear shifter is in neutral, the clutch is pushed in all the way and the blades are disengaged. If all of these things are ok then start checking the continuity of all of the separate safety switches to make sure they are operating properly. I have a newer MTD 18 horse which the safety switch for the deck lift will not stay in adjustment. A little duct tape fixed it. Have fun.
