: I have a MTD 16.5HP 42" that runs fine for a few minutes then it starts groaning real load and slows to a stop. you can play with it to get it to move forward but forget reverse. Also I happened to notice that the transaxle was extremely hot. I checked the fan it it is OK. Any Ideas other than replacement?

check the idler pulleys,my plastic idler melted and broke the drive belt.
