Many things can cause the problem you have,the first thing you have to do is isolate problem to fuel system,electrial system,ign system or mech wear in eng or multi problems on eng/tractor.
Fuel problems could be plugged/restricted fuel filter,plugged vent on tank cap,dirt/water in tank,weak/mushy fuel lines that collaspe from pump suction/pressure due to ethanol content of gas,weak fuel pump,dirt/water in carb bowl & internal passages of carb,sticking float,hi-speed needle set too lean.
Ign problem(s) on eng,coil going bad & eng only running on one cyl,bad plug lead(s)on coil,flywheel key bent/sheared changeing ign timing,worn bearings allowing crank to shift when eng put under load changeing flywheel/ign coil air gap,plugged/restricted oil filter or bad oil pressure sw(if eng has)
Mech problems in eng,low compression due to worn cyl/rings,leaking valve(s)or valves sticking due to carbon buildup on stems,worn valve guides,valves need a clearance adj,leaking head gasket(s)
First thing to do is goto www.kohlerengines.com & download a service/repair manual for eng,after that you might want to do a leakdown test on eng first to check for internal leakage in eng,at 22 yrs eng probably has internal wear/leakage,you won't know how much till you do a leakdown test.The reason problem shows up when engageing trans is hyd system/trans now imposeing a load on eng,in netural eng just free running with no load on same.
Other possible cause's on tractor itself,loose electrical connections,ign sw or safety sw(s)going bad & sensitive to vibration.
