: I am going to buy a new riding mower and there are two things I definitely want; A kohler engine and and automatic transmission. I've read where many people say to spend the extra and buy a John Deere. That's simply out of my budget right now. I've narrowed my search to two mowers, a 2002 Scotts 17.542 which has a 17.5 hp Kohler engine and a Craftsman LTX1000 which with an 18 hp Kohler engine. Both have automatics with 42" mower deck. I really like the Scotts model better because I'm tall and it seems more comfortable for me. The Craftsman is on sale right now so it's $200 less than the Scotts. Since I don't know much about the quality or user friendliness of either, my question is this, "Is it worth the extra $200 to buy the Scotts mower over the Craftsman?". Thanks.

Pay the extra $200 for the Scotts and you've got your John Deere. JD makes the Scotts tractors. Check the JD web site under home owners and lawn and garden. Craftsman is alternately produced by Noma or MTD good but not great. Also - the implements for the Scotts are JD as well and many people buy the scotts parts and save big over original Deere implements.
