I have a MTD 16.5HP 42" that is doing this exactly. It runs fine for a few minutes then it starts groaning real load and slows to a stop. you can play with it to get it to move forward but forget reverse. Also I happened to notice that the transaxle was extremely hot. I checked the fan it it is OK. Any Ideas other than replacement?
Thanks
Richard
: Scott,
: I'm pretty familiar with most hydrostatic drives as they are made by a handfull of manufacturers. First I recommend checking the obvious: Oil level at, but not over the full mark while the tractor is level? Sometimes if under, or over full the oil gets full of air bubbles causing pump cavitation after a bit of use. Does this unit have a replacable filter? When was it last replaced? When it acts up, does the drive slow down or groan louder like it is straining?
: Good Luck,
