If you suspect coils may be weak/breaking down from heat, take both off & take to local mower shop & have them check in a coil tester,weak/damaged flywheel magnets, incorrect coil/flywheel air gap can also cause a problem or worn bearings allowing air gap to change under compression load. Many times a mech problem on eng appears to be an ign problem-valve train problem or valves that need an adj, worn valve guides, problem in carb/fuel system, air leak in intake manifold due to loose manifold, bad gaskets or a crack in manifold, leaking head gasket(s),worn rings/cyl that leak when eng gets hot,all of the above can lead you to believe you have an ign problem,if you don't have a service/repair manual for eng it would be to your advantage to get & give eng a through going over & possibly doing a leakdown test on eng also. One other thing to try on ign system before pulling coils, disconnect Y lead at each ign coil that connects to kill lead from ign sw,these leads have a diode in lead to each coil to isolate coils from each other, you may have a diode thats breaking down from heat, usually but not always if either diode goes bad(shorted internally)it will take out both coils & you'll have no spark.
